Data Recovery from 'Ghosted' (or 'imaged') Hard Disk Drives
Imaging (or 'Ghost') programs such as Symantec Ghost are often used to make identical or near identical copies of a hard disk. This copy can then be used as a backup or to transfer a system onto another hard drive etc. Recovery of data from Ghosted drives is often complicated and time consuming. You frequently need to perform a considerable amount of analysis on a hard disk before you even know if the data is recoverable. Unfortunately, traditional disk imaging tools and methods are designed to deal with intact hard drives, not the unstable ones with bad sectors. Drives stop responding, disks degrade or fail under intensive reading, valuable files remain locked in bad sectors.
CompuRecovery is able to retrieve up to 90 percent of bad sectors that are partially corrupted and cannot be cloned / imaged by ordinary means.
Failing hard drives are imaged with care and intelligence, using as few passes as possible to get the most information. Incorrect operation & use of ghosting programs can have very serious consequences, as the data previously held on the hard disk that is to receive the image will often be completely overwritten. This is not always the case though, as sometimes the disk receiving the image may be considerably larger than the original disk. Ghosting to a disk of this type will almost certainly destroy the file system and root directory structure but some of the data that was previously on the hard disk may still be recoverable. Other problems exist too, such as ghosting in the wrong direction, unexpected program termination or system crash due to program defects or problems on one or more of the hard disks (due to bad sectors etc.)
Recovery of data from ghosted drives is often complicated and time consuming. CompuRecovery frequently need to perform a considerable amount of analysis on a hard disk before we even know if the data is recoverable. Because of this, CompuRecovery charge a diagnosis fee for data recovery from ghosted hard drives.
Under no circumstances should you attempt to run Scandisk or Chkdsk on the hard drive. Doing this will may very well compound the problem as it will further damage an already damaged system. For more information:
